179 Chinese electric buses arrive in Karachi, strengthening Pakistan’s shift towards green transport
KARACHI, Oct 23 (Gwadar Pro) - Pakistan’s efforts to modernise its public transport infrastructure and promote cleaner mobility have received another boost with the arrival of 179 electric buses from China at Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML), highlighting the expanding role of Chinese-manufactured transport technology in the country’s evolving mobility sector.
Karachi Port Trust (KPT) confirmed on Thursday afternoon that the consignment had arrived from Yingkou, China, aboard the vessel MV RUINING 6 on Wednesday. The port authority facilitated the vessel’s arrival and the discharge of the buses at the terminal.
The shipment is destined for Margalla Heavy Industries Limited in Taxila Cantonment and represents a significant consignment of modern transport equipment arriving through Karachi, one of Pakistan’s principal gateways for international trade.
For Pakistan, the long-term success of electric mobility will depend not only on procuring buses but also on establishing the systems needed to operate and maintain them efficiently. Adequate charging facilities, dependable electricity supplies, trained technicians, maintenance arrangements and responsible battery disposal will be important to ensuring that electric public transport remains reliable and cost-effective.
The expansion of electric bus fleets could also encourage the development of local technical expertise and create new opportunities for businesses involved in vehicle servicing, electrical systems and transport management.
