GWADAR, May 1 (Gwadar Pro) - In a major development, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to energize the 1.2 MGD desalination plant. The agreement was signed between the Gwadar Port Authority (GPA), Pakistan Navy, China Overseas Ports Holding Company, and Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) at Naval Headquarters on May 1.
According to the MoU, QESCO will supply 1.5 megawatts of electricity to the 1.2 MGD desalination plant via the Navy’s independent feeder.
Speaking to Gwadar Pro, a GPA official said the desalination plant has been completed with a Rs 2 billion grant from China, in collaboration with the GPA, National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK), and China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC).
With the completion of civil, mechanical, and electrical work, the central control room of the 1.2 MGD desalination plant is now fully operational, he added.
In response to a query, he noted that all related equipment and apparatus have been installed properly to ensure the plant operates at full capacity. Additionally, a one-kilometer-long water supply line has been laid from the plant site to Gwadar city’s main water supply network.
The completion of the 1.2 MGD desalination plant, which spans approximately one acre, reflects China’s compassion for the people of Gwadar, who have long been in desperate need of clean water.
In addition to drinkable water supplied through local reservoirs, the 1.2 MGD desalination plant will provide another vital source of clean water, helping meet the demand of both Gwadar city and Gwadar Port.
Initially, a 0.5 MGD desalination project was proposed following a feasibility study conducted by the governments of Pakistan and China. Later, after reassessing the city’s water needs, the government approved the 1.2 MGD desalination plant on July 5, 2021.
