Pakistan Embassy College Beijing screens documentary on Kung Fu and cultural heritage
BEIJING, Mar 23 (Gwadar Pro) - Pakistan Embassy College Beijing hosted a screening of the documentary Gate of Nine Dragons: Searching for Kung Fu by filmmaker Laurence Brahm on Saturday. The event, co-organised with the Women Empowerment & Development Society in Asia-Africa, was part of Pakistan Day celebrations.
The film examines Chinese martial arts, showcasing Kung Fu as a lens for traditional values like discipline and harmony. These are depicted through styles such as Xingyi, Bagua, and Taichi, reflecting principles that echo across cultures.
At the event, Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, launched a new movie screening series for families and friends in Beijing. “This film bridges cultures through cinema and martial arts,” Hashmi said.
Brahm, the director of the documentary, announced plans for a future film exploring the shared cultural heritage of Pakistan and China, to be shot in Pakistan’s Swat Valley—a region rich in historical significance. “Swat and Taxila were once hubs of global civilisation, alongside Mesopotamia and Egypt. It’s time to remind the world of this heritage,” he said. “The purpose of this film is to bring everyone together. It’s about breaking down divisions and understanding our shared past,” he noted.
Brahm, a fifth-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and Kung Fu practitioner, has produced several acclaimed films on martial arts and Himalayan culture. His awards include China’s Friendship Award and the China Book Special Contribution Award.
