GILGIT, Jun. 21 (Gwadar Pro) - At least 130 students from Karakoram International University, (KIU) Gilgit-Baltistan received cheques under the “China-Pakistan Friendship–Ambassadorial Merit-cum-Need Scholarship” program on Tuesday.
The checks were distributed to meritorious and deserving students in a ceremony held at Musharraf Hall, KIU. The scholarship program, which is supported by the Embassy of China in Pakistan, is designed to encourage gender balance and the female students have at least 50 percent quotas both in KIU’s main campus and sub-campuses.
The regular students, both in undergraduate and graduate programs, of all disciplines of KIU Main and Sub Campuses can apply for the scholarship.
Fifteen students enrolled in PhD, MPhil and MS classes on the main campus received the scholarship based on merit. Of them, nine were female students, including Nazia Hassan, a PhD student in the Department of Biological Sciences.
Vice-Chancellor KIU Engineer Professor Dr. Attaullah Shah distributed cheques to the selected students. “Take advantage of these opportunities and complete your studies, keeping in mind the demands of the modern age,” the Vice-Chancellor told the students, adding, “We are grateful to the Chinese Embassy for the Ambassadorial scholarship program for promoting higher education and research in KIU.”
This was phase II of the China-Pakistan Friendship – Ambassadorial Merit-cum-Need Scholarship. Earlier in August 2022, KIU awarded scholarships to 130 students. Under the first phase, an amount of Rs 5.2 million was distributed among 130 students. At least 50 percent of the scholarships were awarded to female students at KIU.
China Study Centre (CSC) at KIU is managing the process of awarding scholarships to the students of the university. China-Pakistan Friendship scholarship is an excellent initiative by the Chinese Embassy which promotes quality education as well as improves gender balance in the Gilgit-Baltistan region.
