Unit-2 of Shanghai Electric’s 2*660MW Thar coal power plant connected to national grid
ISLAMABAD, Dec 12, (Gwadar Pro)- On Sunday, the second 660 MW unit of Thar Block-1's 1,320 MW coal-fired power plant, owned by Shanghai Electric was successfully synchronized with the national grid.
This was disclosed by the Federal Minister for Power, Khurram Dastgir Khan in a tweet. The minister termed the development as ‘a great news of low-cost energy from local sources’ and said that the benefits of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) were continuously reaching the masses. He added that Prime Minister, Shahbaz Sharif, will inaugurate the historic project in a few weeks.
Shanghai Electric is the sponsor of the power plant and an integrated coal mine of 7.8 million tons per annum capacity.
The news was also posted by several staff members of Shanghai Electric’s Pakistan operations, who celebrated the milestone achievement.
According to a picture retweeted by the Federal Minister for Power, the Unit-2 attained 575.5 MWs load on the first day.
The first unit of the power plant was connected to the national grid on December 2 and subsequently attained full load of 661.3 MWs on December 8.
The project is one of the most anticipated CPEC projects in Sindh's Thar desert. After full commercial operations, the power plants, which are currently undergoing various pre-commissioning tests, will provide affordable energy to 4 million households in Pakistan.
