CPEC’s Mohmand Dam project awarded Rs. 37.4 bln of Saudi loan

PESHAWAR, June 17 (Gwadar Pro) – Saudi Arabia will provide a loan of Rs. 37.4 billion to Pakistan at concessional rate of 2 percent for 25 years for Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project, under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). 

Mohmand project based in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is important not only to the country’s energy security but also food security. Though amid the COVID-19 pandemic, work on the project runs uninterruptedly.

An access bridge of Mohmand project opened to traffic on May 29, 2021. Both Chinese and Pakistani constructors attended the opening ceremony held at the site.

The 118.9-meter-long access bridge lies in the upstream of Mohmand Dam. As an important temporary building of hydropower project, this access bridge will connect the two sides of the Dam and serve for the development and transport of rock quarry as well as the dam embankment in the next step.

According to the project’s contractor, China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC), the work is in full swing, including two Diversion Tunnels and eight construction faces.

The staff of Mohmand Dam project will work harder to complete the project at fast pace and deliver it successfully while continuing to make unremitting efforts in COVID-19 prevention and control.

In late May 2021, Prime Minister Imran Khan went to the site of Mohmand Dam project to oversee its construction progress. PM was satisfied with the pace of the project. PM Khan also attended the groundbreaking of Mohmand Dam in May 2019.

The Mohmand Dam hydropower project is being constructed on River Swat in KP, and expected to be completed by 2025.

This project will generate 800MW of electricity. In addition, it will also serve for irrigation and flood protection. Mohmand Dam will yield annual revenue of Rs 45.76 billion and create over 6,100 job opportunities.
