CHEC to set up 1.2 MGD Desalination Plant in Gwadar

GWADAR: To solve the drinking water problem in Gwadar, China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) and Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) Thursday signed an agreement for the establishment of a 1.2 million gallon per day (MGD) Desalination Plant.

The signing ceremony for the water treatment plant took place at China Business Center, Gwadar. The plant is a grant from the Government of China for the people of Gwadar, according to the CPEC Authority’s statement. The agreement was signed by CHEC’s representative Wu Ping and Mr. Dawood from GPA respectively. It was witnessed by Brigadier Fahad Mansoor, from 440 Brigade, COMWEST Rear Admiral Jawad Ahmed and GPA Chairman Naseer Ahmed Kashani.

On this occasion Wu Ping said: “The project is important for the people of Gwadar in shortening if not eradicating the supply-demand gap.”

Chairman GPA Naseer Ahmed Kashani while highlighting the significance of the project stated that the plant is a “lifeline for the people of Gwadar”, adding the provision of uninterrupted water, which is a fundamental necessity for life, is of paramount priority.

He said that other miscellaneous issues of Gwadar regarding utility services, specifically power, have been taken up with the concerned authorities and would be resolved as of earliest.

Mr. Kashani said that the materialization of 1.2 MGD plant required industrious efforts and complex inter-departmental coordination, adding with onset of this megaproject, GPA would be able to utilize the Free Zone optimally. “It is indeed a win-win situation for all stakeholders,” he said.

The site location of the plant is indispensable in a sense that it is adjacent to both residential and industrial areas. It will make the supply of water to the old city convenient compared to Sawad and Ankara dams.

Regarding the East Bay Expressway, he said that the project is 97% completed, which is the final stage of completion. However, this is not the end and more coordinated efforts are needed for the timely completion of this project.
