BRT Peshwar gets STA’s ‘Honorable Mention’

PESHAWAR: The TransPeshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) gets “honorable mention” in the 2022 global Sustainable Transport Award (STA) for “improving mobility of residents, reducing transportation greenhouses and air pollution emission”.  
Institute of Transport and Development Policy (ITDP) and the Sustainable Transport Award Committee select a city that has implemented innovative sustainable transportation projects in the preceding year. These strategies improve mobility for all residents, reduce transportation greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, and improve safety and access for cyclists and pedestrians. “The winning city and honorable mentions are honored in a virtual ceremony hosted in February of the winning year,” according to STA’s website.
Bogota, Columbia is the winner of 2022 while BRT Peshawar and Tartu Estonia are in the categories of “honorable mention”. Soon after the COVID-19 pandemic began, Bogotá became one of the first cities in the world to create emergency bike lanes.
China’s Harbin and Mengzi remained amongst the nominees. Harbin provides smart and human-centered bus ride services, making public transport reliable and inclusive for all while Mengzi has transformed its previously scant public bus service into an innovative, low-carbon, extensive system, according to STA.
BRT, a flagship project of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was launched on August 13, 2020. The project was completed at a cost of Rs. 69 billion.
The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) imported buses from China for the BRT project. With the last import of 30 buses from China in February 2021, the BRT bus fleet reached 158. TransPeshawar also imported cycles for ‘Zu Bicycle’ a cycle sharing service of BRT from China.
