Islamabad: President Dr Arif Alvi has said that the government was focusing on the empowerment of women by providing them loans and different skills so as to make them financially independent and stronger. He added that the growing population, and facilitation and financial inclusion of differently abled people (DAPs) were major challenges being faced by the country which could be overcome with the support of international donors. He made these remarks while talking to the Country Director of the World Bank, Najy Benhassine, who called on him, at Aiwan-e-Sadr, on Monday, says a press release.

The President briefed the country director about the steps taken by the government for the economic empowerment of women and financial inclusion of DAPs. He emphasised the need for increasing the number of LHW and enhancing the availability of contraceptives to check the increasing population. He said that the rising population and the financial and social inclusion of DAPs, which constituted 12-14% of the country’s population, were the major issues which could be addressed with the cooperation of international donors.

Najy Benhassine said that the new 5-year strategy of the WB for Pakistan was to focus on girls’ education, renewable energy, water and agriculture productivity, revenue mobilisation, social and economic inclusion, and providing clean water.
